  • Dramatic structure: story, conflict, and the beat
  • Breaking down a scene into beats
  • Paired exercise
  • Film examples: Shrek, Learning Uncle Vee (LUV), The Chubbchubbs, Whale Rider

  • The director’s research
  • Dissecting a scene’s key beats (POV, conflict, unification of opposites, climax, reveal, reversal)
  • End result directing vs. directing the emotional content
  • Working with actors and blocking
  • Actors and Directors meet: Directors meet actors for their scenes

  • Participant scene studies with actors

  • Review of shot composition and film language

  • Participant scene study with actors, props and costumes
  • Scene review and feedback

During the first week’s session, participants will pick a scene which they would like to develop during the course of the workshop. Based on the selected scene. Actors will be assigned to each participant to work with both outside of the workshop and during scene performances in the workshop. This hands on practice is critical to the development of each participant.

Course Materials:

Laptop / tablet
2 SD cards
1 Portable hard drive

Assignments:

There will be assignments following each session. All written and production assignments are due at the beginning of class via email.
