First Look At ‘Hidden Figures’: A Film About Black Women Who Pioneered NASA’s Race Into Space

Ted Melfi’s newest film, Hidden Figures, is the phenomenal true story of the Black female mathematicians at NASA whose calculations helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space.

Here’s a first look at the film with tells the story of pioneering yet unsung Black women — namely the “Human Computers” Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorthy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae) — who worked at NASA during some of the most defining moments of the American Century such as the Cold War, the Space Race, the Civil Rights movement and the quest for gender equality.

Slated for wide release in January, the film is based on the book of the same title, to be published this fall, by Margot Lee Shetterly. The author grew up knowing Ms. Johnson in Hampton, Va., but only recently learned about her outsize impact on America’s space race.

Also in the cast? Kirsten Dunst, Aldis Hodge, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali and Glen Powell.
