Producer’s Circle: Film vs. Script (A Discussion on Parasite)

It’s time for a Producer’s Circle.

This week’s Producer’s Circle explores the written word versus the visual product. BTFC members discuss 4x Academy Winner, Parasite‘s, script and the elements produced in the on-screen film.

In these days of creating our own content, everyone is or wants to be a producer.  Understanding how to bring a story to life from script to screen is an important requirement of one’s work as a producer. Join us as we compare Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won’s screenplay Parasite from page to production.

*Please watch the film and read the script prior to the meeting.

***PLEASE RSVP AS USUAL. BLUEJEANS LINKS WILL BE EMAILED***

About Parasite :

A poor family, the Kims, con their way into becoming the servants of a rich family, the Parks. But their easy life gets complicated when their deception is threatened with exposure.

From Hulu: “The Park family is the perfect example of aspirational wealth. The Kim family is rich in street smarts (but not much else). By chance or fate, these two families are brought together and form a complicated, symbiotic relationship.

In a turn of events, the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and Parks is threatened, causing an inevitable collapse. Parasite is a darkly hilarious and heart-wrenching film showcasing director Bong Joon Ho at the top of his game.”

Genres: Comedy | Drama | Thriller

What is a Producer?

The definition of a producer varies depending on whom you speak with, but after 10 years of producing, several feature films, an international doc, many shorts and web series under my belt, I will put it like this….the Producer is the Leader. He or she is the person who feels enough responsibility for the project and people involved (in front of and behind the camera) to keep going, to find a way “to produce what before was not,” no matter what. They see it through.

Producers are usually business minded, like money but also like art, like organizing, are natural leaders, are the hardest workers, the first to set, the last to leave, the ones up earliest, with the most bruises, have made the most mistakes (because they shoulder the most responsibility) and plainly have taken an oath to see it through to the best of their and the project’s ability.

In short, it’s a tough job. But, it’s worth it when the audience is sitting in that theater watching what YOU made happen. No better feeling in the world to me. ONLY RSVP to this learning session if you are a producer looking for a project. We have several good ones you should consider and are putting in place resources to support you though the process.

Our goal is to make sure our members work gets made, and every production is a success. So, if you’re a leader then we are calling on you!

At this (virtual) meeting, we’ll touch on topics such as scheduling, budgeting, marketing, and more.
