Actor, Nate Parker‘s directorial debut in Birth of a Nation, recently took the Sundance Film Festival by storm and swept up a lofty $17.5 million distribution deal. Recently, the trailer was released and audiences can get their first look here.

The teaser, which was released Friday by Fox Searchlight, gives the public a sneak peak at some of the first frames of the Sundance Auidance award and grand jury prize-winning flick. The film, which shares the namesake of D.W. Griffith’s 1915 KKK propaganda film, tells a completely different and more purposeful story. Despite the reference, the film has it’s bases firmly planted in reality, much unlike it’s predecessor.

Parker’s Birth of a Nation centers on Nat Turner, who is the protagonist and leader of a violent slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831. The film was written, directed, produced and also stars Parker as Turner. The actor reportedly quit acting for two years in order to raise money and complete this passion project. The cast also includes Gabrielle Union, How to Get Away With Murder‘s Aja Naomi King, Oscar-nominee Jackie Earle Haley and The Social Network‘s Armie Hammer.
